Alice by Heart by Steven Sater6/7/2023 Is that a militant Red Cross Nurse demanding that Alice get BACK. But then the lines between these two worlds begin to blur. What follows is a stunning, fantastical journey that blends Alice's two worlds: her war-ravaged homeland being held together by nurses and soldiers and Winston Churchill, and her beloved Wonderland, a welcome distraction from the bombs and the death, but a place where one rule always applies: the pages must keep turning. In her desperation to keep him holding on, Alice turns to their favorite pastime: recalling the book that bonded them, and telling the story that she knows by heart-the story of Alice in Wonderland. Sick with tuberculosis, Alfred is quarantined, with doctors saying he won't make it through the night. Amidst the rubble of the Blitz of World War II, fifteen-year-old Alice Spencer and her best friend, Alfred, are forced to take shelter in an underground tube station. A young girl takes refuge in a London Tube station during WWII and confronts grief, loss, and first love with the help of her favorite book, Alice in Wonderland, in the debut novel from Tony Award-winning playwright Steven Sater.

The serious man simone de beauvoir6/7/2023 We either want to ignore the facts that are true about us or the possibilities that we have so that one side will just fall into the mud pit already, and we can all stop pulling on this stupid rope. Last episode, what followed from this, if you’re Sartre, is that people are made massively uncomfortable by this constant tug-of-war that’s going on, and we all tend to gravitate towards removing one side of the people pulling on the rope. So, last episode we talked about Sartre’s idea that at the foundation of who we are there’s a constant tug-of-war that’s going on between what he calls our facticity and our transcendence: our facticity being the facts that are true about us at any given moment and our transcendence being the possibilities that we have at our disposal. Today’s episode is part two on Simone de Beauvoir.

Derald wing sue race talk6/7/2023 The author also challenges the idea or attitude of “colorblindness,” a concept that was originally intended to emphasize the universality of humankind regardless of skin color, but ultimately invalidates a central experience for racial/ethnic minorities: the reality and relevance of race in human interactions. The book addresses the taboo nature of race talk and highlights the importance of engaging in productive dialogues about race and racism, indicating increased positive personal and social relatedness with others. The author describes the master narrative of Whites and the counter-narratives of people of Color as dialogical exchanges that often result in unproductive conversations about race. In Race Talk and the Conspiracy of Silence, Derald Wing Sue (2015) discusses reasons that make discussions of race and racism difficult, even in psychotherapy.

As such it has been suggested that in order to read in the correct chronological order the Robot and then Empire series should be read first. The Foundation Series is also closely tied with two other of Asimov's series, the Robot and Empire Series (and also Asimov's first ever novel "Pebble in the Sky") - which are all set in the same single unified universe (with the Robot and Empire series set much earlier chronologically). The short story called The Mule that forms part of the foundation novel (the first in the series) also won a retrospective Hugo award in 1996. In 1965 the original Foundation trilogy (Foundation, Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation) fought off a number of influential series including JRR Tolkiens Lord of The Rings to win a special Hugo Award for Best All-Time Series, to this day it is the only series to win such an award. The series consists of seven volumes spanning 500 years and although part of a series, can be read as stand alone stories. The Foundation Series is an award winning epic science fiction collection of novels by the legendary Author Isaac Asimov.

Boxers gene luen yang6/7/2023 Where would a Chinese American Catholic’s loyalties lie? Would they be with the people featured in the first volume of the diptych Boxers, downtrodden Chinese peasants fighting against foreign oppressors and intolerant missionaries and priests? Or would they be with the protagonists of the second book, Saints, brave and well-meaning Christian men, women and children (western and Chinese) slaughtered by the violent and bloody uprising?Īfter decades of humiliating foreign colonial control under the UK, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Austria and the US, a nationalist movement comprised largely of Chinese peasants and farmers arose. What intrigued me most at first about Boxers & Saints, Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel about the Chinese Boxer Rebellion, was how the author would deal with the material’s inherent moral dilemma. First Second Books, recommended for High School and Up. evil slugfest.īoxers & Saints, written and illustrated by Gene Luen Yang. Although Gene Yang envisions a similarity between the Boxers (once transformed into their mythological hero aspects) and modern superheroes, BOXERS & SAINTS is far from a simple good vs.

Nyphron rising6/6/2023 And while I’m not sure it was ever the author’s overriding intention, the evolution of Arista into a self-contained character has been a welcome addition to the stories, her skills and passions driving her into ever more difficult situations. Royce and Hadrian are back, but this time their ‘crooks for hire’ mentality has fallen by the wayside, somewhat, as real life and dreams get in the way. Collecting the third and fourth stories in Sullivan’s Riyria Revelations, Rise of Empire is a step down from the first two stories, but still a captivating and fun continuation of an interesting world. With ‘Theft of Swords’ by Michael J Sullivan finished a week or so ago, I had desperately wanted to dive straight into the second book in the series, ‘Rise of Empire’. With Christmas behind me and 10 days’ worth of holidays ahead of me, it’s time to plough through as many books as humanly possible.

Fierce Valor by Jared Frederick6/6/2023 In Fierce Valor, historians Jared Frederick and Erik Dorr unveil the fuller story of Easy Company’s longest-serving commander. Rumored to have gunned down enemy prisoners and even one of his own disobedient sergeants, Speirs became a foxhole legend among his troops. His comrades called him “Killer.” Of the elite paratroopers who served in the venerated “Band of Brothers” during the Second World War, none were more enigmatic than Ronald Speirs. Ambrose’s Band of Brothers will be drawn to this complex portrait of the controversial Ronald Speirs, an iconic commander of celebrated Easy Company during D-Day and beyond, whose ferocious courage and drive across three wars were matched by a devotion to duty and a hidden heart shadowed by lost love.

Cloud street book6/6/2023 Together with veteran international theatre director Gale Edwards and State Opera of South Australia CEO and Artistic Director Timothy Sexton, Palmer has capitalised on the inherent music of Winton’s prose to produce an excellent libretto, and the result is an opera worthy of national and international acclaim. Since retiring as a Judge of the New South Wales Supreme Court in 2011, composer George Palmer has spent the past five years turning his vision of Cloudstreet as an opera into a reality. Its unparalleled evocation of an epoch and unflinching portrayal of the zeitgeist of the ’40s, ’50s and early ’60s have enabled Cloudstreet to assume a life of its own beyond the printed page. Seldom has an Australian novel so masterfully chronicled the vicissitudes of suburban family life juxtaposing the ordinary with the extraordinary, the prosaic with the poetic, and the magical with the real. Its characters and narrative have become part of our consciousness and national identity, capturing an essential understanding of the Australian psyche and the struggle of working class families across two tumultuous decades of social and economic change. There is scarcely an Australian novel so intimately beloved and culturally revered as Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet. ★★★★½ George Palmer, Gale Edwards and Timothy Sexton do justice to one of the greatest Australian stories ever written.
