Flow psychology book5/31/2023 ![]() ![]() Flow experience corresponds to an optimal psychophysical state: participants said it is like being in the zone, being on the ball, being in the groove. Flow refers to a state of mind which brings together cognitive, physiological and affective aspects. The concept of flow became the key element for the theory of optimal experience, since it provided the best user experience. It usually stretched the person's capacity and provided a challenge to his/her skills. The flow experience came when the activity was difficult and involved risk. Participants were motivated by the quality of the experience they had while they were engaged in the activity. ![]() He called this state flow, because during his research, people illustrated their intense experiences using the metaphor of being carried by a current like a river flows. He was surprised to discover that enjoyment did not result from relaxing or living without stress, but during these intense activities, in which their attention was fully absorbed. He considered artists, writers, athletes, chess masters, and surgeons – individuals who were involved in activities they preferred. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi introduced flow theory in the 1970s based on research examining people who did activities for pleasure, even when they were not rewarded with money or fame. White gold thomas pellow5/31/2023 ![]() ![]() A breathless messenger burst into the office of James Bagg, vice admiral of Cornwall, with the shocking intelligence of the arrival of enemy ships. News of the fleet's arrival flashed rapidly along the coast until it reached the naval base of Plymouth. The flags on their mainmasts depicted a human skull on a dark green background-the menacing symbol of a new and terrible enemy It was the third week of July 1625, and England was about to be attacked by the Islamic corsairs of Barbary. As the mists lifted and the summer skies cleared, it became apparent that the mysterious ships had not come in friendship. It was not the season for the return of the Newfoundland fishing fleet, nor was a foreign flotilla expected in those waters. The lookout who first sighted the vessels was perplexed. It enabled the mighty fleet to slip silently up the English Channel, unnoticed by the porters and fishermen on Cornwall's southwestern coast. A sea mist hung low in the air, veiling the horizon in a damp and diaphanous shroud. THE PALE DAWN sky gave no inkling of the terror that was about to be unleashed. ![]()

The hustler by walter tevis5/31/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() He has the absolute authority we would see again and again: the air of a man serenely himself. Scott, as the cold, vicious gambler and manager Bert Gordon, was appearing in only his third movie. ![]() The real contest in "The Hustler" is not between Fast Eddie and Minnesota Fats, but between Eddie's love for Sarah and his self-destructive impulses. The test of Newman's character comes not so much at a pool table as in his relationship with Sarah Packard ( Piper Laurie), whose story is told as fully as Felson's own this is not one of the macho 1990s movies in which the filmmakers are unable to see a woman except in the simplest terms. ![]() The film provided Paul Newman's breakthrough into the first rank of Hollywood actors, but it is instructive to see how important the other actors are how "The Hustler" benefited by being made before the big-money star was required to appear in almost every shot. You will eventually reveal what you are made of, and pool is a game where skill can carry you only so far. The world of pool halls, flophouses, bars and bus stations provides no hiding place. The film could be about any seedy game depending on bluff, self-confidence, money management and psychology: It was remade as "The Cincinnati Kid," about poker. The players are contesting each others' inner strength. Billiards is the arena for the movie's contests, but there is no attempt to follow the game shot by shot, or even to explain the rules. ![]() |
