![]() ![]() Imperialism also dominated the mental universe of the colonized and has continued to do so long after independence was gained. ![]() The title of the book echoes Ngugi Wa Thiong'o's 1986 "Decolonizing the Mind." It builds on the Kenyan writer's thesis that colonialism did more than impose control over peoples' lands and resources through military conquest and political dictatorship. As she indicates, "The book is written primarily to help ourselves." ![]() The reader may think that this is an `anti-research book on research,' but Tuhiwai Smith's main concern is to inspire indigenous peoples as researchers. The book is fueled by anger in addition to a thorough knowledge of the literature on which rests the Western tradition of classifying and representing the other. An indigenous woman, the daughter of a Maori anthropologist, she grew up in a world in which science and Maori beliefs and practices coexisted. Tuhiwai Smith is an Associate Professor in Education and Director of the International Research Institute for Maori and Indigenous Education at the University of Auckland. The author describes the devastating effects of such research on indigenous peoples and articulates a new Indigenous Research Agenda which aims to replace former Western academic methods. ![]() In 200 pages she presents a cogent critique not only of anthropology, but of the cultural evolution of the entire Western concept of research. In this important book, Linda Tuhiwai Smith meets a formidable challenge. ![]()

The Oregon Trail by Rinker Buck6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() At once a majestic American journey, a significant work of history, and a personal saga reminiscent of bestsellers by Bill Bryson and Cheryl Strayed, the book tells the story of Buck's 2,000-mile expedition across the plains with tremendous humor and heart. With "The Oregon Trail "he seeks to bring the most important road in American history back to life. Today, amazingly, the trail is all but forgotten. The trail years also solidified the American character: our plucky determination in the face of adversity, our impetuous cycle of financial bubbles and busts, the fractious clash of ethnic populations competing for the same jobs and space. In the fifteen years before the Civil War, when 400,000 pioneers used it to emigrate West-historians still regard this as the largest land migration of all time-the trail united the coasts, doubled the size of the country, and laid the groundwork for the railroads. Spanning 2,000 miles and traversing six states from Missouri to the Pacific Ocean, the Oregon Trail is the route that made America. In the bestselling tradition of Bill Bryson and Tony Horwitz, Rinker Buck's "The Oregon Trail" is a major work of participatory history: an epic account of traveling the 2,000-mile length of the Oregon Trail the old-fashioned way, in a covered wagon with a team of mules-which hasn't been done in a century-that also tells the rich history of the trail, the people who made the migration, and its significance to the country. ![]()

The Affinity Bridge by George Mann6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() What we first notice about Newbury is that he - like Sherlock Holmes - is a thorough man, meticulous in his detection as is Miss Hobbes a meticulous woman, whom he has high regard for, and more so than most women of that era would have got from their superiors. ![]() By order of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, they are sent to investigate a crash site in Finsbury Park. Newbury and his assistant Miss Hobbes have to investigate the policemen strangler killings and a series of assaults by what are known as Revenants, or zombified humans on the prowl. ![]() Newbury is a rational man who doesn't believe in séances or tarot readings but finds rational explanations for what evidence he has, which for him is becoming a bit of a headache. With so much change happening in the city during Victorian times, this has become the era of new technology, clockwork automatons and airships lead the way, but Newbury still has to think hard on the evidence he is presented with. A glowing policeman has been seen at night, with several people murdered in the London area. Sir Maurice Newbury is in the midst of a problem with one of his current cases, and is trying to make sense of what he would normally see as nothing more than simple hocus-pocus. Steampunk is at the heart of this first novel from the man who penned the Ghost series of novels and audio scripts for BBC's Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes. ![]()

Bridge to terabithia novel book buy6/8/2023 ![]() The vivid and sensitive character portrayals and changing relationships (especially between Jesse and his father) are superb. This is not a message book, however Paterson subtly handles the complex subject in an eloquent way that makes evident the expansion of her writing ability. ![]() Jesse is left with a myriad of emotions, some of which he is ashamed of, until his deep sense of loss brings him to the realization that knowing Leslie has made him a better person. Then one day, while Jessie is gone, Leslie swings over the flooded creek to her death. ![]() Leslie opens Jesse’s eyes to new worlds with her imaginative stories and different way of thinking. They call their kingdom Terabithia and invent magic rituals to go with it-swinging on a rope over the creek to enter in and calling to the Spirit of the Grove. But Jesse’s natural inclination to support the underdog is the beginning of their friendship-one that leads them to build a “castle” out of rough boards in a grove near their homes.
